6 CPD Points - The Royal College of Anaesthetists
This intensive one-day course provides healthcare professionals with the knowledge and practical skills required to manage cardiac arrest and emergency situations in post-cardiac surgery patients. Through a blend of expert-led lectures, hands-on skills stations, and high-fidelity simulation, participants will develop a structured approach to managing deterioration and arrest in the cardiothoracic setting.
The course covers current guidelines for resuscitation after cardiac surgery (CALS), management of cardiothoracic emergencies, human factors in emergency care, and the principles and management of temporary pacing. Participants will gain practical experience in key interventions, including temporary pacing management and emergency chest reopening, before applying their learning in simulated cardiothoracic emergency and cardiac arrest scenarios.
By the end of the course, participants will be better equipped to recognise, assess, and manage critically unwell post-cardiac surgery patients, while enhancing teamwork, communication, and decision-making in high-pressure clinical situations.
